  5. in Par, Cornwall, England. The gothic imagery and polished
  6. storytelling of Du Maurier's 24 books were often perfect fodder for
  7. a plot-hungry Hollywood. Among her works made into films: Jamaica
  8. Inn (1939), Rebecca (1940) and The Birds (1963), all directed by
  9. Alfred Hitchcock.
